Dear Parents,
Last Friday evening, it was my absolute pleasure to welcome our community officially during our welcome event for 2025. It was wonderful to see many of our Kindergarten families and other families, who have joined our Sacred Heart community this year, at our event. Events like this remind us that a school is more than just a place of learning—it’s a family. It should be a place where friendships are built, support is given, and memories are made. Our welcome evening should be all about celebrating that sense of togetherness that makes our school a special place.
Thank you is extended to all of my staff and to Father Matthew for attending, I know that parents love the opportunity to see teachers outside of just the classroom environment.
I want to take a moment to thank our P&F Executive for their tireless efforts behind the scenes and all of our parent volunteers for their support leading up to the night.
Here is to a wonderful 2025!
OPEN DAY
Our Open Day was a resounding success with so many new families coming to visit our school. A huge thanks to the administration team for coordinating this event and to all of my staff and our parents for their support with the set up, preparation and the expo. Our Year 6 children once again represented our school with pride and enthusiasm and I felt so fortunate to have them lead our school tours and show our prospective parents our amazing school.

THE GREAT SLEEPOVER DEBATE
Sleepovers—those late-night adventures filled with giggles, secrets, and pillow forts—are a cherished part of childhood. But as parents, you grapple with the question: Are sleepovers safe or risky? Let’s explore the rewards and risks, empowering you to make informed decisions for your family.
Rewards:
1. Independence: Sleepovers allow kids to practise separation from parents/caregivers, fostering independence.
2. Flexibility: Children learn to adapt to different family cultures and routines.
3. Memories: Many adults fondly recall sleepovers as cherished childhood memories.
Risks:
1. Abuse Concerns: Some parents worry about their kids being exposed to abuse while away from home.
2. Behavioural Disruptions: Sleepovers can lead to disrupted sleep schedules and behavioural issues.
3. Health and Safety: Consider food allergies, screen time, and exposure to illness.
Your Decision Matters
As parents, it’s essential to examine your motivations. If fear drives your choices, you should pause and reflect. Balance safety with allowing your children to explore the world. Remember, there’s a fine line between caution and overprotection.
Tips for Safe Sleepovers
1. Know the Host: If your child is sleeping over at a friend’s house, ensure you know and trust the host.
2. Communication: Teach your child about boundaries, good touch vs. bad touch, and when to seek help.
3. Alternatives: If sleepovers don’t feel right for your family, find other opportunities for self- efficacy and adaptability.
4. Preparation: Actively discussing with your child how to be safe on a sleepover is recommended.
May God bless all our families.
Mrs Leanne Meehan
EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL
Thank you to our School Captains who are such wonderful ambassadors for Sacred Heart. They represented us at our open day this week with such confidence and each wrote a beautiful speech around a variety of unique aspects of our school. Congratulations Elle, Conrad, Abigail and Hugo.
Our ‘Getting to know you’
Interviews are nearly completed and have been well received by parents and teachers. We hope they provided an opportunity to share qualities about your child and to hear how they have settled into the new school year.
School Photos
Our school photo day is this Friday 7th of March. Please order your photos online from ‘The School Photographer’ with X2261EC49H order code. All orders are through the company directly and no orders are taken at school. On the photo day, students should wear their full summer school uniform including the correct shoes, navy socks, tie with shirts or dress.
For those of you ordering sibling photos, the online bookings close today to give the School Photographer the chance to organise lists to ensure these photos are taken. Please order sibling photos by 5 March.
Good news story
We received a beautiful email from the founder to ‘Kids Giving Back’ to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible students from our school who generously gave their time to volunteer with them last year and during the school holidays. Congratulations to:
Maggie Dunger
Ivy Billington
Camille Dunger
These students were among 1170 children who contributed to making meals, breakfast boxes, snack packs, and care packs for vulnerable communities across Sydney. Thank you for living our values of faith, generosity and courage and making a real difference in the world. We are very proud of you!
Devices
All mobile phones brought to school should be kept in students' bags and not used at all throughout the day. Smart watches should be kept on school mode with only a clock face and on flight mode whilst at school. All messaging apps on phones, watches and iPads should be turned off at school.
We ask for parental assistance with this matter, especially by not sending messages to your child throughout the day. If you have an urgent message for your child, please email the office.
Zing Activ Interschool Dance Challenge - is on Tuesday 8 April
This event is open to all students in Years 3-6. The tickets for the challenge go on sale on Monday 10 March. We have no control over ticketing, so please buy your tickets as soon as possible. The system opens at 9am to ensure you get tickets, particularly in the area our school has been allocated.
The students wear two outfits, one is worn underneath the other.
- A white t-shirt with denim shorts (or skirt). This will be for the showdance.
- Own choice - Over the top of their white t-shirt and shorts, the students may wear their own choice of clothes. As there are no change facilities, students just take this layer of clothing off once the partner dances are finished, to be ready for the showdance. The choice of clothing might include:
- Buttoned shirt (over the white t-shirt)
- Long pants (completely optional over the shorts as some children like to cover the denim)
- Dress (would cover both the t-shirt and shorts)
- blouse (over the white t-shirt)
- Skirt (completely optional over the shorts as some children like to cover the denim)
Year 6 Environmental Leaders
Thank you to our Environmental leaders who participated in The Green Schools Collective last week at Balmoral Beach for Clean-up Australia.
The students were also able to listen to Clean-up Australia Chair, Pip Kiernan speak about her father who founded CUA and the importance of clean-ups and the litter/waste problems in Australia today.

The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge is now open and Sacred Heart is excited to be participating!
What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge?
The PRC is a statewide Challenge that encourages students to develop a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and enables them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, but a challenge to encourage each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.
All students who complete the challenge and have their reading record validated by the school’s PRC coordinator will receive a certificate signed by the Premier of NSW.
How many books do students need to read?
Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are challenged to read or experience 30 books. 20 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books. Books can be read with a parent, carer, teacher or another student.
Students in Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 20 books independently. At least 10 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books.
Books must be added to a student’s online reading record by Friday 22 August 2025 in order for their reading record to be validated and receive a certificate.
How do students log their reading?
Student Login and password details will be handed out this week.
Students can then access the PRC’s Student Experience site using their DoE username and password, or can log into the site via the Student Portal.
Students may also record their reading on the Personal Reading Log and submit it to the PRC Coordinator by 23 August 2024, who will complete the reading log on the students’ behalf.
How can students find books on the NSW PRC challenge lists?
Our school Library has a wonderful selection of books. Books on the Challenge Booklist are easily identifiable by the coloured PRC sticker on the spine indicating either K-2 (red), 3-4 (green), 5-6 (purple) and 7-9 (blue)
Mosman Library also has a range of books and books read together in class or at home, can be included too.
A quick guide for logging books:
- Log into the Student experience site using your DoE student username and password.
- Use the blue search bar to search for books you have read.
2b. If the title does not appear, you will need to enter it as a personal choice book.
To enter a personal choice book:
Click on the icon in the top right hand corner:
- Click on “My reading log”

3.Fill in the book details under the “Add a Personal Choice book” field and click “add”
If you have any issues with logging books, please email – cecilia.jago@syd.catholic.edu.au
HAPPY READING!

The Importance of Regular Reading
When children engage in daily reading, they are buiding a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Consistency is key—it helps develop fluency, comprehension, and a love for books that can last a lifetime. Each reading session strengthens their vocabulary, improves focus and concentration, and enhances their ability to empathise with others. Reading regularly also supports academic success across all subjects, as it fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Power of Vocabulary
One of the most significant benefits of regular reading is the development of a rich and expansive vocabulary. As children encounter new words in various contexts, they begin to understand their meanings and how to use them effectively. This growing vocabulary is crucial for comprehension; the more words a child knows, the better they can understand and engage with the text. A strong vocabulary is also a key factor in academic success. It allows children to express their ideas clearly, understand complex instructions, and grasp the content of different subjects more effectively. Whether it’s decoding a challenging text in English or understanding a word problem in Mathematics, a robust vocabulary empowers children to excel.
The Value of Diverse Genres
Exposing children to a wide range of genres is equally important it’s fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or biographies, each genre offers unique benefits and insights. Fiction fuels imagination and creativity, while non-fiction introduces factual knowledge and real-world concepts. Poetry can inspire an appreciation for language’s rhythm and beauty, and biographies allow children to learn from the lives of others. By exploring different genres, children can discover what truly excites them, sparking a passion for reading that will continue to grow. This variety also helps them develop a well-rounded understanding of the world, as they encounter different viewpoints, cultures, and ideas.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge provides a structured yet enjoyable way to encourage children to expand their reading habits and immerse themselves in a diverse range of books. By setting aside time to read with your child, visiting the local library, or discussing books together, you can reinforce the joy and value of reading beyond the classroom. Let’s inspire our children to embrace reading as a lifelong adventure!
If you would like some support with helping your children choose quality literature or find their favourite genre and/or author, please don’t hesitate in contacting our fabulous librarian, Mrs Jago, she will always be more than willing to help you get lost in a book!! You can email her at: cecilia.jago@syd.catholic.edu.au
Ysafe Cyber Safety Sessions – Staying Safe Online!
On Monday 3 March, our students and parents took part in some really important (and interesting!) cyber safety sessions with ySafe. We learnt how to make smart choices online and how to keep ourselves safe while using social media, playing games, and chatting with friends.
Key Takeaways:
- Spotting Negative Online Behaviour – Know what cyberbullying looks like and how to avoid it.
- What to Do If It Happens – Report, block, ask for help, change servers, and take screenshots as evidence.
- The Role of Bystanders – There are three types (outsiders, defenders, reinforcers), and what we do matters!
- Staying Safe on Social Media & Games – Be aware of who’s watching, use privacy settings, and don’t fall for scams.
- Top Gaming Tips – Keep personal information private, use blocking tools, and always ask for help if something doesn’t feel right.
These sessions were a great reminder that the internet can be a fun and positive place when we use it wisely. Keep the conversation going at home and let’s help our kids be confident and safe online!
For further Parent Support, including information on screen time, parental controls, social media and more, please visit our ySafe provided online school safety hub website.

Have a great week!

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday
Yesterday we acknowledged Shrove Tuesday at Sacred Heart, with students and staff receiving a pikelet to enjoy. This gesture was a reminder that we are preparing to enter into the Church season of Lent. Today, as we begin our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, we focus our attention towards a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Today, the eldest child in each family will bring home a Project Compassion family box in support of Caritas Australia. Please set this box up in a special place at home. During this Lenten season, may we show our support to Caritas Australia by donating generously towards Project Compassion

Please see the schedule below for upcoming Family Masses. This Sunday, all Sacred Heart families are welcome to attend the Parish Family Mass at 9am, followed by morning tea. An extra special welcome to families in MacKillop House (green). If you are attending Mass this Sunday and your child can assist, or you are able to bring a small plate for the morning tea, please fill in this google form.
Kristen Jackson,
Religious Education Coordinator.
Lent is the 40 day liturgical season of fasting, special prayer and almsgiving. We do this to prepare our hearts for Easter, the most joyous day of the church year!
Today at Mass we receive ashes on our foreheads and we say ‘Repent and Believe’ to remind us that we need God’s forgiveness.
Genesis 3:19 - “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust and to dust you shall return.”
The word Caritas means Love. What act of kindness could you do today to show your love?
A few ideas of things you can all do as a family during Lent:
*Write a family Lenten prayer and place it on your fridge.
*Say a prayer before dinner and reflect on the good things that have happened during the day.
*Give a family member a big hug and thank them for something that they have done for you.
Sacred heart Church is hosting various programs during lent.
Join us for Adoration on Wednesdays 6pm starting in Lent
Sacred Heart Church will be open for Adoration Wednesdays 6-7pm starting 12 March in Lent.
Please note: Adoration will not take place on Wednesday 19 March due to a Sacramental Program in Sacred Heart Church that evening.
If you would you like to join a Lenten prayer group,
- Deacon Justin’s prayer group will take place at 10am Fridays of Lent (starting 7 March) in the MacKillop Community room. To join call 8969 3200 or email secretary@holyfamilymosman.org.au
- Fr Matthew’s prayer group will take place in the parish hall on Cardinal Street, Mosman 7pm Wednesdays of Lent (starting 12 March) following 6pm Adoration in Sacred Heart Church.
- Denise Playoust’s prayer group will be meeting 6.30pm Mondays during lent at various homes (starting 10 March)
If you are interested in joining or hosting a Lenten prayer group please contact the parish office secretary@holyfamilymosman.org.au

On the first Friday in March we celebrate World day of prayer. Every year, the World Day of Prayer unites people across the globe in a spirit of worship, solidarity, and shared faith. This year our focus is the Cook Islands. The theme, “I Made You Wonderful” from Psalm 139:14, serves as a beautiful reminder of God's creative work in each of us and His love of diversity.
Reminder:
Our next community playgroup is on Monday 24th March at 9am in the parish hall. Parents, grandparents, carer’s… All are welcome.
Tea/coffee & light morning tea is provided for adults.
Walking for Wellbeing group Tuesday morning at 8:45am. Meet at Cardinal St , school front gate. We walk for approx 45 mins, then have morning tea.

What an eventful couple of weeks it has been in the sporting sector for Sacred Heart. There are a lot of wonderful results to commend students for. Read along for the results!
On Friday 21st of February, we had two students compete for a spot in the MacKillop Team in Wollongong. We congratulate Jorge Pyke in Year 6 for his selection into the NSW U/12’s MacKillop Blue Boys Basketball Team. It is no easy feat and a remarkable effort. He will be competing at the NSW All PSSA Boys Basketball Championships on Tuesday 17 June - Thursday 19 June 2025 at Sutherland District Basketball Stadium.
On Monday February 24th, we had one student attend the Conference Rugby League trial. We would like to congratulate Conrad Barbour for representing Sacred Heart beautifully and for progressing to the Sydney Rugby League Trial. We wish him the best of luck as he trials on the 10th of March for a place in the Sydney Catholic Schools team.
Also on Wednesday the 5th of March, we will have Mia O’Callaghan representing Sacred Heart at the 2025 SSU Australian Football State Selections for Girls AFL in Centennial Park. If successful, Mia will progress onto the State team and compete in the National Championships. We wish her the best of luck on this trial.
As mentioned in the last sporting edition, we had Zachary Meacock away in Maitland for the NSWPSSA Cricket Championship. This championship was a week long and the MacKillop team put up an amazing effort and walked away with a bronze medal. Such a great achievement by our students in the Catholic sector. On an individual level, Zachary had a great tournament - knocking a milestone 54 not out off 53 balls in game 2. Not only was Zachary captain of the MacKillop team this year, but all of the hard work has seen him rewarded with re-selection into the NSW cricket team - he has been invited to compete in the national championships in Ballarat in October this year. Congratulations to Zachary and we look forward to your future results!

Baggy Blue - Zachary sizing his head up for his baggy blue presentation later this year.
On Monday 3rd of March, we also had 22 students representing Sacred Heart at the Conference 1 Swimming Championships. It was a great day out with beautiful weather and records being broken. The students that attended represented Sacred Heart so beautifully so I commend them on their behaviour and representation of the school. Please join me in congratulating the following students for progressing to the Sydney Catholic Schools Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Monday 24th of March.
- Eliza Pearson: Girls 10 50 Free & Girls 8-10 50 Fly JUNIOR
- David Persinger: Boys 8-10 50 Breast JUNIOR
- Lachlan Woodlock: Boys 12-13 50 Back SENIOR
In closing, this is just a reminder that Tuesday March 11 will mark our first Sacred Heart sporting event which will be our annual cross country for students in Year 2-6. This will be held at Allan Border Oval. The first four students overall in each age group with the exception of the 8 and 9 year olds as it is a combined event will progress. Unfortunately children who turn 7 this year will not be able to progress as per the guidelines stated within the sporting association. Children who are 7 and choose to participate will be competing for enjoyment or as practise for the following year. As the event is held in year groups, a child who is the same age below or above your child’s year group may take the placing after final results have been collated.
