12th April 2019
Dear Parents and Carers
It has been a long, eleven week term, a busy but exciting one. We are all due a well deserved and much needed break. I wish you all a lovely holiday and a happy Easter. The students return to school on Tuesday the 30th April.
Thank you to Liam Jowett and the staff at after school care for taking on the challenge of vacation care at Sacred Heart for the first time this holidays. Liam has designed a very interesting, kid friendly program for the holidays. Liam is also offering vacation care for our staff development day on Monday 29th April. Please refer to the SCECS tab in newsletter as it contains the vacation care plan for each day.
This week the teachers and Mr Brierley have presented the Easter Story through prayer, song and actions. The children’s reverent participation was evident in the way they listened sang and presented each stage of Jesus’ journey to Calvary. As we celebrate Easter this year let us thank God for what we have especially in terms of family, friends and faith.

This week a group of our senior leaders, Mrs Lozina and I attended mass at St Mary’s Cathedral to farewell the Executive Director of Schools Dr Dan White. Dr Dan has led Sydney Catholic Schools for the last 10 years. He was very humble regarding his accomplishments and his leadership of 152 Catholic Schools catering for 85 000 students. Mr Tony Farley will take up leadership of Sydney Catholic Schools next term. His most recent role has been as Executive a director of the Catholic Commission for employment relations
Thank you to the Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 parents who came to the Dancefever Showcase this week. I’m sure you can see why the children love their dance lessons so much. Next term the senior children will have coding with Scope IT and The younger grades will participate in Term 3. All classes have also been booked in for Fizzics visits (making science fun!) next term. Term 4 will continue to be our gymnastics term. Please refer to the Term 2 Timetable tab in this newsletter as it contains your child's classroom timetable Monday to Friday.
Uniform
At the beginning of Tem 2 children are able to move into their winter uniform. Usually we have a two week grace period with the option to wear either winter or summer uniform depending on the weather. Due to our uniform supplier changeover that period of grace, of course, will be extended. Please refer to the email "Uniform Supply & Suppliers" sent yesterday for further details.
Have a well deserved break from the routine of school.
Regards
Julie Caldwell

Today, four friends from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School Mosman are getting ready to compete against swimmers from across the state as part of a school-first freestyle relay team.
Jessica Hogg, Phoebe Lechner, Isabella Livermore and Cassidy Thomson, all Year 6, are the first students from their school to ever advance as far as the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) competition, which will be held at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 12 April and draw competitors from across the state.

Closing remarks from Basketball Coach Mark
Basketball has officially finished at Sacred Heart and what a season it was! Twenty of our thirty teams finished in the top four spots and we had an overall winning percentage of 77%. Five teams went to the Grand Final and two finished as Champions. Congratulations to both the Year 5 Boys A Wizards and Year 5 Girls A Jaguarz.
It wasn’t all about winning as our kids showed amazing resilience in so many hard fought games and a brilliant sense of sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play the entire season. The shining spirit and character of the players was always on display. It was a real pleasure to meet and get to know so many of our talented players.
I believe we’re developing a great culture at basketball with hard work, discipline and a love for the game at Sacred Heart. We saw the greatest number of kids play this past season than ever before and my hope is that the program grows even bigger.
A special thanks to our coordinators Katie, Annie and Irenie who do a tireless job each week along with the many team coaches and managers. I’d also like to thank the club President Chris for his remarkable support throughout the season and the parents who make the effort each week to get the kids to the games and cheer on our teams.
Finally to the players themselves, I’m so proud of the way you have all carried yourselves each and every game, the efforts were outstanding. As Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.”
Well done teams!
Coach Mark
Throughout the term many students have been working on a variety of enrichment activities designed to enhance their skills, expand on their interests and promote a love of learning and discovering. These activities have provided opportunities for the students to have choice and voice in the design of their learning and to share their knowledge and discoveries with their peers.
A Year 2 group has been part of Empower Hour. They are currently preparing to present on their topics that include Memory and how it works, Pollution, The timeline of a baby and Fashion. Their enthusiasm and ideas make this an exciting and enjoyable activity for all involved.
Another group from Years 3-6 has been in an Engineering challenge to build a free standing structure using only newspaper and tape. It needs to hold at least one team member. This involved working in a team of 2 or 3, brainstorming ideas, designing, building, testing, amending/redesigning and presenting the final structure for testing. The students evaluated their experience and shared their results with their peers. The development of a growth mindset in regards to taking risks and the determination to find solutions are great outcomes from these types of activities. Our school foyer was a great setting for this display to be enjoyed by everyone who entered the school.

Other activities that students are currently involved with include Empower Hour in Years 3-6, Prose and Poetry in the Literacy Group and some Special Projects.
These opportunities allow students to work on subjects of interest, take responsibility for planning and managing their work and time and to have the pleasure of sharing these interests and skills with their peers.
It is exciting and rewarding to work with these students who take great pride in what they do, always offering interesting and constructive advice to their co workers.
This week, the Year 6 Technology Team demonstrated their leadership and presentation skills as they facilitated a workshop for over 20 students ranging from Years 1 to 6.
The focus of this workshop was on training students to use the Seesaw collaboration app. The students who attended where very engaged and learnt quickly. They will provide ongoing support to their peers in the classroom when using Seesaw. The Technology Team is looking forward to running several workshops across a range of apps throughout the year.
Thank you Technology Team!
Heartfelt
Term 1, Week 11
Week eleven. What can I say? As a parent, I can last the ten-week term but that eleventh week is a test of patience beyond measure. To add to this, our Lenten Journey is coming to an end, which can sometimes be a mixed bag of emotions. If we have honoured our Lenten promises, we might feel victorious, refreshed and ready to conquer the world with our new perspective on life. If we have wavered, we might feel that we have let ourselves down and we might even feel a little deflated. This is where “John 3:16” comes into play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
No matter what we do, how successful we are or even if we feel we need “a little more work,” God doesn’t discriminate. He showed us true love and salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through our honouring of the Easter Triduum and our faith in God’s great plan, we are called to eternal life. If this Lent has been a tough one, brush off the disappointment and rejoice in the knowledge that you can start afresh, and embrace the love of God each and everyday. Have a safe and happy holiday break. Happy Easter to you all!
SHM Lenten Journey
Week 5 challenges were:
Faith: Thank God for all the beautiful things you have.
Generosity: Donate your pocket money.
Courage: Have the courage to walk in Christ’s footsteps, even when it’s difficult.
Next week we commence week 6; The journey towards Easter.
Download this Lenten app. Spend time in reflection.

Gift of bread thoughts……
“We’ve been doing Gift of Bread because it’s a really simple idea that gives a lot back. It takes bread – a staple food for most people, that was going to be unused and gives it to those who need it.
It’s a win for the environment, as food is not going into landfill and it makes the more vulnerable people in our community (homeless, elderly etc) feel like someone is looking out for them.
It shows my children how easy it is to be part of a community and models how easy it is to help others. It’s also quick – it only takes 40 minutes out of your day. My car also smells lovely after dropping the bread off too!”

This week, all grades led our school community in liturgies commemorating the days of Holy Week. Year 2 began our week sharing Palm Sunday which then continued into Kindergarten’s Washing of the Feet and Year 1’s The Last Supper. Year 5 and Year 6 continued with The Garden and the story of the Crucifixion with Year 3 and Year 4 ending our liturgies sharing the story of the Resurrection.

Many thanks for the hours of preparation by teachers and students, as well as the parents and other members of the school community who came to support our students in their celebrations.

A Parish-based, family-centred program
Our dynamic and interactive Sacramental Programs for school-aged children are at the heart of the life of our Parish community. They touch and revitalise our faith community. Families involved are treasured and prayed for by the wider community, as parents prepare their children to receive the sacraments of Eucharist, Reconciliation and Confirmation.
The First Reconciliation and First Communion programs are family-centred to assist parents in the preparation of their children and to offer the support, which can come through meeting in a small group at a family home. They give due acknowledgement to the primary role of parents as educators in faith of their children, while providing opportunities to reflect at an adult level.
The small family-group sessions are held in the home of a group member. The material in the program is arranged so that parents and children might dialogue together at each session and begin a sharing which can continue at home.
It is envisaged that:
- Children are divided into groups of about six to eight, with their parents and a
trained leader who is one of the parents or a parishioner, and who facilitates the
session in each small group.
- Children sit with their parents and together they participate in the
session.
- The initiation of children into the sacramental life is the responsibility of the whole parish community into which they are being initiated. Parents play a key role, as they gradually increase a spirit of faith in their children, and with the help of the parish community prepare them for the fruitful reception of the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. The role of the parents is also expressed by their active participation in the celebration of sacraments.

Ten things girls need to thrive at school
When the results from the NAPLAN 2018 testing session were released we had the first 10-year data set.
Once again girls seem to be achieving results in reading, numeracy, grammar and punctuation and spelling consistently above that of boys. While there has been clear progression since 2008 in these results for all learners, girls’ results seem to have stayed just ahead of the boys over the past decade. Of course, NAPLAN is only one measure of learners’ ability in schools, but currently it is one that schools and society pay much attention to.
Related article: Engaging boys in learning
So, what does this mean? There are many truisms which seem to endure over time about girls’ achievement. Nevertheless, the current theory around learning and that which drives most curriculum in Australia and other western societies is based on social constructivism.
Social constructivism and girls
Social constructivism suggests that learning is best done in groups and in social contact with others, in other words that learning is socially situated and knowledge is constructed through interaction with others. Of course, if this is true, testing such as NAPLAN which treats the learner as an individual working alone and autonomously lags behind the types of learning going on in classrooms today.
Often, we want to say (and this would suit girls) education happens best through social-situated learning and learning together through interaction and discussion. But I would hesitate to see this in such simple terms. All parents know that each child is markedly different and even those of the same gender display different attributes and may be inherently social or more of a lone operator.

10 top tips for girls in schools
- Provide choice for reading and writing tasks: It has been thought that girls want to read narratives and storybooks about relationships and friendship groups (for example: Babysitters Club or Alice Miranda). There should be a continuous move to break the mould of narrative writing and encourage girls to read and write information texts and factual recounts both inside and outside of school.
- Unknown female role models in maths and science: Recently there is a focus on famous women in Maths and Science in popular culture – the recent Hollywood movie Hidden Figures captures the strong female mathematical work which underpins much of the famous scientific progress in the 20th century. A focus at home and in school on these historical and current day achievements will support girls in achieving in different ways than those usually expected in schools.
- Welcome different text types and recognise multimodal writing and reading as legitimate literate activities: Social media is often cast as being in opposition to traditional learning and school achievement. Clearly, well-positioned and safe social media interaction is all about learning in a social constructivist manner.
- Make learning more communicatively based: One of the key theorists in education is Vygotsky – his theory suggests that language and thought are linked, in other words that that mental representation has a linguistic structure. Let your girls talk about their academic work and what it means to them.
- Making learning both solitary, small group and larger groups for learning: To cater for individual differences, ensure that there are still opportunities for a range of learning and assessment opportunities in school and outside.
- Provide social opportunities: The role of family in providing social opportunities and times to build relationships in safe and comfortable places can only support learning inside and outside of schools.
- Make connections with what they already know from the cultural and family background and make those legitimate ‘funds of knowledge’ in the home and the larger community: Each family has its own story and characters and timelines. These are the social DNA that girls will find useful in building their own stories and identities both inside and outside their family and community. If the tale is different than others that they know, make that a point of celebration!
- Embrace the friendships and relationships: Girls like to have their friends around them, and some like to have quiet time at home away from their friendships, support them either way and remind them that talking about their ideas is helpful to making sense of them.
- Build resilience and strength and encourage identifying role models in the wider world: We are in a period of focus on the emergence of important roles for women – women as political leaders some of whom are forging new models of leadership; women Hollywood directors who are forging new styles of movies, and other leaders such as Jacinda Ahern who is demonstrating female political leadership in a different way. Talk about it.
- Recognise that we are all learners too! Remember the old saying, “you learn something new every day?” It is important that students understand that learning is fun and we all do it every day of our lives even after the school experience is over.
We currently have approx 100 new books for the library that need to be covered with contact. If you have some time available over the coming weeks, could you please contact the school office to let them know. Many thanks in advance.
