Dear Parents and Carers
One of the hallmarks of a great school is when the parent community and the school work together to achieve their goals. Saturday night’s function was an example of how our families and school work together for the sake of the students in our care. We are stronger together and can continue to build a school community where all members feel nurtured, welcome and safe. One of our newer members of our community remarked at how positive it was to see teachers and parents who work together so well and show respect for each other.
Many thanks to our P and F committee who worked tirelessly to ensure the event was such a highlight. Thank you to Chris and Vanessa Janes, Steph Bailey, Paul Graham, Stewart Old, Henry Pilat, Clare Tynan, Siobhan Roberts Thompson, Linda Del Nin, Rachel Steer, Stefan Mielewski, Michelle Crone, MJ Whitson and Jacqui McCarthy for everything you did to ensure the night was such such a success. Im sorry i was unable to stay for the full evening. Many thanks to Mrs Kelly who was Acting Principal last week while I was away due to illness.
A number of staff have been at Professional Learning this week working on our Wellbeing goal for 2019. We hope to implement the Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework this year. Thank you to Mrs Edwards, Miss MacLarn, Mrs Thiermann, Mrs Miller and Mrs Kelly who will be helping implement PBL.
Next Wednesday is our Cross Country event. Children can run or walk the course. Please discuss this with your child what they should do on the day.
Mark currently resides in the Northern Beaches and is coaching First Grade for Warringah Rugby Club in the Shute Shield competition. He has also had experience coaching in Japan.

Hands up who had fun at ‘Sacred Heart Celebrates’ on Saturday night?
And who else had sore cheeks from smiling and laughing so much?
If you joined us on Saturday night, I’m sure you’d agree that our casual ‘community soiree’ was a genuine celebration of our lively, fun-loving and close-knit school community.
We had a great turnout (despite the rain) and everyone was treated to delicious food and rousing entertainment from our live musicians, which carried into an awesome playlist from the DJ. Stories and laughter were flowing (as much as the drinks) among groups of old and new friends, under the lights strung across the basketball court. The fun atmosphere made for a memorable evening.
Special acknowledgement is owed to; the P&F Committee who thoughtfully planned the event, put it all together, and tidied up again, when the party was over; Michelle Glynn who worked tirelessly on the day and through the night; as well as Julie Caldwell who contributed an enormous amount of thought and consideration to all the details. Thanks also to our dedicated Office staff, years 4, 5 and 6 students, parent volunteers, Masterchef petit four baker, our talented musicians, and the Beaupre family who donated the stunning artworks to raffle.
Congratulations to our lucky raffle winners: Gabrielle O'Carroll and Claire Brickley (Yr 2 Teacher) who each won one of the stunning artworks.
And don’t be too disappointed if you missed out on Saturday night, because we’ve vowed to do it again when we can. Please join us next time!
Sacred Heart Swim for Success

Sacred Heart local girls secure their spot at the PSSA Swimming Championships to be held in April at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The girls swimming journey began at their school carnival in early December of 2018. By displaying their swimming prowess, they were individually selected to form a 4 x 50 metre Freestyle relay to represent Sacred Heart Catholic School at the Eastern Suburbs Swimming Trials in February. After placing in the top 3, they then prepare for their next event at the Eastern Region Championships held in late February. After a dominating 1st place swim and breaking the Eastern Region record that was held for 8 consecutive years, they take their swimmers and caps to the Mackillop Swimming Championships. Through their dedication, teamwork and passion for the pool, the girls gave it their all in this high pressure event and walked away with a 1st place swim selection for the PSSA Swimming Championships, many smiles and wonderful memories of their final year of Primary School.
We have three more weeks of school and although I look forward to the celebration of Easter, I feel a bit resentful that it’s during the school holidays so I don’t get to walk the Easter Triduum with you all, in a more intimate way. To make up for this, I’ve decided to write about these special days in our church calendar for the next few weeks. Let’s begin with Holy Thursday. I’m sure you all know about the washing of the feet (by the way, you all have a bar of soap in your family Lenten packs) and the Institution of the Eucharist. Of course, this was the greatest gift that Jesus Christ gave us; the ability to partake in the Eucharist on a daily basis through Mass.
What about the Chrism Mass? What is it, I hear you ask?
Around the world, Bishops and priests come together at their local Cathedrals on Holy Thursday morning to celebrate the institution of the priesthood. During the Mass, the bishop blesses the Oil of Chrism that is used for Baptism, Confirmation, and Anointing of the sick or dying. Priests from every parish gather at the cathedral to participate in the Mass and bring home the Holy Oils. The sea of priestly robes is breathtaking. At this Mass, Archbishop Anthony Fisher will also wash the feet of twelve priests to symbolize Christ’s washing of his twelve Apostles, our first bishops and priests, reminding them to go out into the world, be humble and evangelise with love and conviction.
If you get the chance, take a trip to St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday,18th April at 10.30. It is a spectacular Mass which not only entices the eyes but convinces the soul that the breath of God is alive and well in us all.
SHM Lenten Journey
This week’s challenges were:
Faith: Think of a time when you weren’t patient. Ask God to make you more patient.
Generosity: Share something with a friend this week.
Courage: Stand up for a peer in the playground or at work.
Next week we commence week 4.
Download this Lenten app. This is a great way to install daily prayer and reflection into your day. It only takes a few minutes to go over the day’s reflection but it can really change the way you see the day.
ALTAR SERVING TRAINING NEWS:
Well done to the SEVENTEEN year 5 and 6 students who got out of their warm beds extra early to be part of the altar training sessions. Deacon Joe was informative and entertaining and the children were attentive, polite and absolutely terrific! There is one more session on Tuesday 7th May (after the school holidays).
If you would like your child to be placed on a weekend Mass roster, please email mary.lozina@syd.catholic.edu.au. They have the options of:
Saturday night 6.15 pm
Sunday morning 11am
Sunday night 6pm
Altar serving is usually a monthly commitment and of course, they must have attended the sessions.
We need a few more people to sign up for two specific jobs:
- Crate return on Fridays: We still need some drivers to return 10 crates to Baker’s Delight in Neutral Bay. You don’t need a very big car.
- Delivery of bread to St Leonard’s church hall in Naremburn on Friday mornings after school drop off between 9 and 9.30
- https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0548acac2da4fc1-shmgift
We would really appreciate your help. Children are most welcome to help with bread packing on Thursdays but they need to be supervised by their parents.
SPaR……….Stop,Pray,Reflect…
We finally had our library space back for SPaR this week. It felt great to be able to catch up over a coffee and reflect on the intimacy of spirituality and faith.

The Rocks Excursion Recount - Step back in time for Year 4's
On Friday the 22nd of March year 4 traveled by bus, to the Rocks for an excursion.
When we got there our guide ‘Julie’ took us to an old sandstone wall to discover what we already knew.
She said “ Captain Cook was a very famous English explorer who was sent all over the world to trade goods. In 1770 Captain Cook traveled along the east coast of Australia, but he couldn't find anyone to trade with. He called Australia Terra Nullius (land of nothing). He then sailed to a place called Botany Bay, named after his botanist ‘Joseph Banks’.
Botany Bay on that day was lush and green, He thought it was a great place to start a new colony. Joseph found lots of amazing flowers and wildlife such as the banksia flower also named after him.
English authorities found his diaries and then read how awesome Botany Bay was. England had lots of convicts ( prisoners) who had done very small crimes such as stealing a loaf of bread, but England had way too many people so they wanted to send them away.
So King George sent all the convicts to Australia to start a new colony. There was 11 ships called the First Fleet , 6 of them were used to hold the convicts, 2 for supplies and 3 for the soldiers and captains. They realised when they landed that Botany Bay was not a good place at all to start a new colony so they came to a place called Sydney cove.
After all that we got dressed up as convicts and free settlers some people were even captains. We also got name tags that had information about our character and the role they had. My character was Mary Reibey she was 17 yrs old and her crime was stealing horses while disguised as a boy, I got married to a free settler and then I became a free settler however my husband ( Thomas Reibey) died from sun stroke. I the took over his well running company and became very wealthy. I, Mary is the one on the $20 note.
Julie then took us down to Tench arcade named after Watkin Tench who wrote journals in the time of the First Fleet. She also introduced some other important roles like the surgeon, Author Philip and Francis Greenway.
We then walked down to Cadman Cottage which was one of the oldest buildings, it was built at the time of the First Fleet. Then we strolled up to some old buildings that had some platforms and a rope to pull up supply in the olden days.
A few minutes later we went to a wall with shells in the mortar the women made but this made them sick so they stopped using it. For our last activity we went to a statue with 3 sides 1 representing convicts, 1 representing free settlers and the other representing the soldiers.
I learnt so much on this excursion I also had lots of fun, I would like to learn more about life on the First Fleet ships.
