Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to the 30 or more parents who attended the Writing workshop on Tuesday. If was a very successful morning where parents were able to see our goals in action. Copies of our learning continuum for writing were handed out so that parents could see where their children were at with their writing and what their future goals might be. The highlight of the workshop was seeing and hearing our writing from Kinder to Year Six. Three of our public speakers (Ruby, Patrick and Henry) entertained the audience with their writing and tips for assisting students at home. Many thanks to Mrs Kelly and Mrs Miller for preparing the workshop.
Last Friday’s Big Blue Awards winners were:
Kindergarten: James Rich & Emma Cichon
Year 1: Samik Panta & Isabella Johnson
Year 2: Charles Wilkins & Benjamin Allan
Year 3: Lola Channing & Benjamin Griffin
Year 4: Ruby O'Donnell & Tom Ramadge
Year 5: Amelia Nobilo & Mia Winter
Year 6: Henry Burton & India O'Connor
Arrowsmith: Ben Naidou
Today was our sports jersey day. Many thanks to those who contributed a gold coin to contribute to our second year six student who has made it through to play for NSW in the Catholic school nationals competition. The children had a fun day and we are all looking forward to the holidays.
Congratulations to our staff who entered the SCS Step Challenge. We had four teams of five staff compete. The winning team walked over 4.5 million steps in eight weeks. They not only won the school Step Challenge but came second out of 258 teams in the archdiocese. What an achievement! Congratulations to Ingrid Carvalo (team leader), Mary Lozina, Andre de Villiers, Martina Peterson and Cecilia Jago.
Mr Tony Farley visited today. Tony is our new Director of Schools for SCS. We spoke of the North Sydney network of schools and how they are currently advertising for an executive leader of our network. This will be an innovation in leadership for Catholic Schools and an exciting change for our schools in the north.
This week the BIG SCIENCE show visited and children saw many experiments that could not be done in a classroom. View the article a little further in the newsletter.
Please find the Term 3 School Timetable for each classroom's weekly plan and the sport uniform days. Year 5 Gold have art in class on a Wednesday as such 5G sport uniform extra day falls on a Wednesday.
We wish to remind parents that it is necessary to arrive on time by 8.40am daily, a teacher is on duty in the school courtyard from 8.10am or please make use of before school care through SCECS and refrain from making medical appointments during school hours.
Please try the staggered collection at pickup times in car-line, K-year 2 from 3-3.10pm and years 3-6 between 3.10-3.20pm due to congestion on the surrounding roads.
Have a wonderful holiday.

Well, Term 2 has just flown by. I can’t believe we are already half-way through 2019!
Speaking of flying, this year’s BOOK WEEK theme is –
READING IS MY SECRET POWER!
Reading empowers all of us, no matter what age, race, gender or religion. How awesome that we share this universal ‘super power’ with so many people! Did you know that our secret power begins pre birth? Being read to as a baby in the womb is the first time our secret powers were used without even knowing it.
Family reading practices and the influence of educators, significantly impact a child’s attitude towards reading. Our role is to ignite that flame within the child to become curious and connected to texts and to be able to express their ideas creatively.
Book Week runs from 17th August to 23rd August 2019 - Term 3, Week 5
Our annual BOOK WEEK PARADE will be held on TUESDAY 20TH AUGUST at 8:40am.
During that week, we will also have author Lesley Gibbes visit and talk about her books and the work of an author.
A great holiday time activity would be to start looking around home for bits and pieces for that perfect costume! – no need to go to great expense, just use your imagination (we all have an array of bits hidden in cupboards!) We love to see children who have been creative and made their own!
Think about the theme - secret powers can also be super powers. There are lots of amazing characters from books to inspire you eg any super hero, Roald Dahl’s Matilda, Enid Blyton’s Famous 5 or Secret 7, real life heros and their story eg sporting, or someone that has made a difference to our world.
We are also running a POSTER COMPETITION to support our Book Week Theme. Our amazing art teacher Miss Conroy, has been working with the children on this already.
Finally, we have our CARNIVAL BOOK FAIR which will take place from the 2nd September to 6th September. The library will be open before and after school on that week for you to purchase books. Your child/ children will have an opportunity to put together a wish list as part of their library lesson/
Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday break.
Please remember that from next term, a library bag will be required each Friday in order to borrow and return books.
Happy Reading
Cecilia and Josie

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)
Each year we offer our students in Years 2 to Year 6 the opportunity to participate in The University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, quality skills-based assessment program which rewards and recognises achievement. All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested in Australia.
Certificates are awarded for each year level as follows:
- High Distinction to the top 1% of students in Australia
- Distinction to the next 10% of students in Australia
- Credit to the next 25% of students in Australia
- Participation to all other participating students
The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. ICAS gives you broad insights into your child’s performance across English, Mathematics and Writing. It gathers performance information through a 30-60 minute supervised in-school test.
ICAS Assessments are now online, a move that reflects a sector-wide transition to computer-based assessment. This allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.

Year 6 Vinnies School Sleepout - August 9-10

For the first time, on August 9 and 10, a number of Year 6 students will be taking part in a School Sleepout to raise money for St Vincent de Paul. The students will be sleeping on school grounds among the elements for one night, while taking part in activities that emphasise empathy for those less fortunate.
We have five week to raise as much money as possible for our Year 6 students.
If you would like to donate to our cause, we would appreciate any and all contributions. Please also feel free to ask friends and family to support our students in their experience.
To donate, you can head to bit.ly/shmsleepout or scan the QR code below with the Camera app on both iPhone, iPad or Android devices.
Earlier this week we were visited by a scientist from Fizzics Education for the grand-finale after these crazy scientists have been with SHM over the past term teaching K-6 age appropriate science and experiments. All lessons were very well received by the students. They were taught about electronic circuits, the science of toys, marvellous mixtures, energy - light and sound focus, chemistry capers and about the properties of materials.
This week Fizzics showed us how mega bubbles are made with a mixture, what colours light is made of, how sounds change to a higher pitch when instruments are shortened, how air can move in circles when pushed out from a drum, how air rushes forward to support other moving air and the impact of liquid nitrogen on the properties of materials. The children were exclaiming and clapping with excitement as various scientific wonders were presented. We definitely have some curious scientists in the making.
A special thanks to Mrs Martina Petersen who arranged this incursion for the school term.
The winners of the chess tournament played during the term in chess lessons with their own podium finish.
1st place: Max Fenwick
2nd place: Thomas Swain
3rd place: Lucas Fernandez
Excellent chess moves played and touch it, move it rules strictly enforced by all players.

July Vacation Care at Sacred Heart Mosman
Please return your booking form by email, or in person to the service by Friday June 28th to avoid disappointment.
Below is an important change about late booking fees for Vacation Care. Please see the Family Handbook for a list of full conditions: Late Booking Fees: Fees will increase by $10 per child, per day minus the CCS, if you are booking within 7 days prior to the attending date (e.g. If you wish to book for a Wednesday you must have made your booking by 11:59pm Tuesday of the previous week, in order to avoid the $10 late booking fee). To avoid late surcharges in bookings, we encourage families to book earlier so that SCECS can staff, plan experiences and resources accordingly.
