17th May 2019
Dear Parents and Carers
This Sunday you are all invited to the Year 2 Family parish mass at Sacred Heart at 9am on Sunday. The gospel for the day contains one of our most profound messages of the Catholic faith: “Love one another as I have loved you.”
The following, from Pope Francis also touches on our calling to invest in relationships.
“Today’s media environment is so pervasive as to be indistinguishable from the sphere of everyday life. The Net is a resource of our time. It is a source of knowledge and relationships that were once unthinkable. However, in terms of the profound transformations technology has brought to bear on the process of production, distribution and use of content, many experts also highlight the risks that threaten the search for, and sharing of, authentic information on a global scale. If the Internet represents an extraordinary possibility of access to knowledge, it is also true that it has proven to be one of the areas most exposed to disinformation and to the conscious and targeted distortion of facts and interpersonal relationships, which are often used to discredit…The present context calls on all of us to invest in relationships, and to affirm the interpersonal nature of our humanity, including in and through the network. All the more so, we Christians are called to manifest that communion which marks our identity as believers. Faith itself, in fact, is a relationship, an encounter; and under the impetus of God’s love, we can communicate, welcome and understand the gift of the other and respond to it.”
Next week we will be revising our conversations with the children regarding bullying: identifying it, strategies to deal with it and the way that bystanders can become upstanders by taking appropriate action against a bully. Year Six will be organising another play date on Friday by providing structured play activities for all children.
Friday 31st May at 8.40am is our Big Blue Award assembly, the coffee cart will be here and all parents are welcome.
Many thanks to all our staff and families who supported the Year 3 and Year 5 students in their preparation for and supervision of the Naplan tests which were held this week.
The Kinder and Year 1 School Athletics Carnival was a great success. The children had such fun while learning valuable skills that they can use when they progress to our “big” carnival. Thank you to Mr DeVilliers, our staff and our Year 6 sports leaders who organised the day.

Crazy Sock Day
On Friday the 31st of May we will be holding crazy sock day in order to support one of our children who will be representing NSW in basketball. Children can wear any sort or type of sock on that day for a gold coin donation.
Our next P and F meeting will be held on the 11th June at 7pm in the school hall. All parents are welcome.
Tell Them From Me Survey
We are inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and strategic planning process. Our Cyclic Review will be held in August 2019 and the data received from these surveys will be integral in our plans going forward.
We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Sacred Heart.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL: www.tellthemfromme.com/7tz54 The survey will remain open until Friday 7 June. You can survey at any time during this window and surveys take approximately 20 minutes to complete. All remaining, open surveys will be automatically closed on Friday 7 June at 4:30pm.
I will be absent for a number of days next week due to professional learning commitments and attendance at the NSW Catholic Principals Association Conference. The conference focus is Faith, Learning and Wellbeing. If you have any concerns I can be reached through the school office or Mrs Kelly and Mr Brierley will be leading the school in my absence.
Don’t forget your disco tickets! Its next Saturday.

Term 2, Week 3
This week we commenced the celebration of family. Each student was given a prayer wheel to take home and share with the family. Choose a special time, such as after dinner, and take turns at having a spin and saying a kind word.
We are also running a “Family Life” competition. Each student has been asked to name a special time that they share with their family and why it’s so special to them. The most thoughtful entrant will receive a movie pass to share with the family. Please encourage your child to fill in the form and leave it in the box provided in the school office. The winner will be drawn on Friday 24th May at assembly.
“Sometime ago, a big group of professors from the United States came to our house in Calcutta. Before leaving they said to me, “Tell us something that will help us become holy.” And I said to them, “Smile at each other.”
(Because we have no time even to look at each other.)
And one of them asked me, “Are you married, Mother Teresa?”
I said, “Yes, and I find it sometimes very difficult to smile at Jesus for He can be very demanding.”
From “Love: A Fruit always in Season.” By Dorothy S. Hunt
It’s amusing to think that Mother Teresa found her betrothed, Jesus Christ, demanding. My guess is that there were never enough hours in the day to be the hands of change to so many children in India. Family Life is also demanding, so as parents and siblings, smiling more just might be the elixir to sweeten the journey.
Happy Family week!
Do you knit?
SHM is eager to teach our older students to knit so we can make blankets for Vinnies. A few talented parents or grandparents would really make life easier.
Are you free on Thursdays from 1 to 2 pm? We would like to start in the next few weeks. Please contact Mary Lozina or the school office.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds4-GowLEEY&t=174s
We need to fill three spots:
- Bread delivery from Baker’s at Bridgepoint. Can you pick up the bread? You would need a large car and a regular Thursday commitment to bring the bread to the parish hall. You can pick up any time you like. This would suit someone working from home or perhaps a retiree? Any grandparents out there?
- Bread delivery (one box) to Crows Nest on Friday mornings before 11am
- Return of crates to Baker’s Delight Neutral Bay on Fridays (small to medium car is fine).
Call Mary Lozina if you can help.

It has been an exciting time in Empower Hour during Term 1 and the beginning of Term 2. The Empower Hour group of students from Years 2-6 have just concluded their presentations of the topics they are passionate about. The communication skills of these students have been amazing. With such confidence and enthusiasm, they exhibited the power to entertain, inform and stir up curiosity.
The emphasis has been on skills such as talking not reading, making the most of aids and props to enhance their transfer of knowledge and finding creative ways to engage with their audience.
The breadth of topics covered made the experience of this group very special. They were exposed to a variety of fields in topics such as Malaria, Atomic Fusion, How Illusion is used in the Movies, Poisons, The Chinese Zodiac, The Colour Wheel, Pollution, 3D Printers, Fashion: Making a Skirt, The Paranormal and All about Sounds.
The group and the invited guests are developing the critiquing skills to enable them to provide feedback and constructive suggestions for bumping up future presentations. The audience also picked up helpful tips for their own use.

Congratulations to all the students who participated in this group. It has been a wonderfully exciting and informative experience and a real pleasure to follow you and support you through to your presentation.

Chess Challenge - Monte Saint Angelo College
Monte Saint Angelo College hosted their annual Interschool Chess Challenge earlier today. The Sydney Academy of Chess is running their 2018 Primary Schools One Day Chess Interschool Tournament and Sacred Heart, Mosman has been invited to participate and the following chess players attended. Lucas Fenwick, Max Fenwick, Lucinda Hughes, Teddy Stackpool Habel, Thomas Swain and Jack Whitson.
Well done to the team.
Congratulations to our small but mighty SHM Band who put on a great performance for our mums at the Mother's Day breakfast. It's heartening to hear our young students joining together to share their gift of music.
If you play an instrument and you are in year 3 upwards, we would love to have you join us. Playing in a band promotes learning, memory and camaraderie. What more could you want?
Our library provides a social space to meet, collaborate, research, learn and relax. It develops a reading culture and raises the level of literacy across the school. All students are encouraged to borrow each week which empowers them to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers and skilful, efficient researchers.
Resources include fiction and non-fiction books, audio books, journals and learning objects.
All our resources are catalogued through the Oliver Library Management System which provides ongoing access to authentic, authoritative, age appropriate resources to specifically meet student and staff needs. We are constantly purchasing and obtaining new books to keep up to date with requirements and popular requests.
Library borrowing day for K-6 is Fridays. However, books may be returned at any time during the week.
We encourage everyone to respect and take care of our books and so therefore require all students to have a library bag to protect books when carrying to and from school.
Library bags can be ordered through the Uniform shop -$10 new and $5 second hand via QKR!. However, any suitable cloth bag from home is acceptable.
Students and parents are responsible for ensuring that books are returned within due dates and to report any lost or damaged books that ultimately need replacing via a donation on QKR!
Each term, we are provided with the latest catalogue from the Scholastic Book Club which is a wonderful opportunity to purchase books for your child/ children. The school in turn, receives vouchers to purchase new books and resources as a result of this.
For your convenience, orders are made online via their website -scholastic.com.au/LOOP (or download the app) and delivered to school for collection.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is well under way and runs through until August 30, 2019. Students have been allocated a unique password to log their personal progress through their website- www.premiersreadingchallenge.nsw.edu.au. Books read together in class can also be added to their reading log.
Book Week celebrations and the Carnival Book Fair are coming up during 17-23 August with a Book week parade, best costume and poster competition and a visiting author. This year's theme is “Reading is My Super Power”. We will keep you informed of scheduled dates, times and a little more about our competitions. Watch this space …….
HAPPY READING!!
The year 1 children taking action for the environment with a Bin it! movement to help the enviroment.
Year 1 were inspired to take action after watching a persuasive Ted Talk on the damage straws do to the environment. They thought they should start close to home and set out to keep a tally of the rubbish thrown on the ground during lunch time. Rubbish that could end up in our oceans.
Meanwhile in science, Year 2 were studying the importance of water and our oceans. They were also collecting rubbish in the playground to save the oceans. Both year groups teamed up, so a full understanding of the size of the problem could be established.
Attached are some photos of the children in action, their tallies, comic strips representing the poor fish and the persuasive texts written in the hope of asking Sacred Heart to take action.
