Dear Parents and Carers
Last week’s gospel tells the parable of the Prodigal Son. It is a story that can connect with so many facets of our lives. When we are estranged from family and friends or when we move away from our faith. Like the prodigal son there are times when our faith is not as strong as it could be and we stray away from God. Like the father in the story God is always there to welcome us with open arms.
Many thanks to Mr De Villiers and the staff for the well run Athletics Carnival last week. We are grateful for the many parents helpers that assisted and made the day run so smoothly. We used Narrabeen Athletics Centre this year and the feedback is that it is an excellent venue that we will continue to use in the future.

School Counselling Service
This term we have been happy to welcome Shannon Hughes to our school community. Shannon is our new school-based counsellor through CatholicCare Sydney, and will be at our school on Thursdays. School counselling provides counselling and other supports to students and their families, where there may be stress, significant underachieving, relationship or behavioural difficulties, mental health issues or other factors impacting on a student’s learning. It is a short term counselling service, however if there are issues affecting the student that require longer term support, or do not impact on the student’s learning, recommendations for alternative relevant external support for students and their families can be provided. School based counselling provides individual counselling, parent support, group based activities, and liaises with our school’s executive to identify how to best support students at Sacred Heart .
If you have any questions regarding this new service available to our school community, or would like to discuss a possible referral to Shannon, please feel free to speak with me.
Regards
Julie Caldwell

Term 1, Week 10
The next part of the Easter Triduum is Good Friday. Why is Good Friday called “good?”
The first theory is That Good Friday led to the Resurrection of Jesus and his victory over death and sin, the very pinnacle of Easter celebrations.”
The second theory is Good Friday derives from God or “God’s Friday.”
The third theory is that “good” used to be another word for “holy.” This makes sense. Good Friday is a holy day; a day that makes us reflect on the love that Jesus Christ had for us all when he suffered in the worst way possible for the our salvation and the gift of eternal life.

Gift of bread thoughts……
“I love doing GOB because it gives me an opportunity to do something for the others whilst being a part of a bigger chain of wonderful people, that feed others by utilising the bread that would have otherwise been wasted.
I love our chit-chats whilst packing the bread and I enjoy the fact that I get to involve my kids, Sai and Gobind too. Thursday evenings are my children’s favourite!! They love the little treats that Mrs. Lozina offer them:) “

Year 2 Expo ‘Families, Past & Present’
Earlier this week the Year 2 classrooms had a very busy morning, as a culmination our ‘Families, Past & Present’ history unit the students were encouraged to select an area of interest to research and present their chosen topic to parents and fellow students during an Expo. During the expo our parents and students were asked how the subject they studied has changed over time.
If you did not make it to the expo, you more than likely had a couple of newly learned quiz questions coming your way during pickup!
Aiming for the Stars - Year 1 Classroom Activity
As part of the Year 1 study of objects in the sky, students designed and created their own communication satellites. The atmosphere in this classroom of engineers was buzzing.

Read LessStudents in Years 3 and 5 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests.
In 2019, your child will sit NAPLAN paper tests. However, children in other schools across Australia will sit the NAPLAN online tests this year. Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that all schools will move online by 2020. State and territory education authorities will determine when their schools move online.
NAPLAN paper tests will take place between 14 - 16 May, 2019.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
All students in Years 3 and 5 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should first discuss the use of any disability adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher.
A formal exemption may be granted for a student with disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background.
Your school principal can give you more information on special provisions or the process required to gain a formal exemption.
