Dear Parents and Carers
Last week our parents for Kinder 2020 brought their children to school. Its very hard to predict what the world will look like when they emerge from university in 2036 ready to look for jobs. What advice can we give to parents of these students in terms of academic studies? Three things spring to mind:
- Read: Where else could we learn about?
History and the mistakes that have been made that should not be made again
Fantasy: where good and evil, prototypes and archetypes, quest and rebellion are explored.
- Count: Don’t be scared of maths.
We will need mathematicians to analyse what has happened and see what we can learn from that. Others will use maths to predict the way we shop, live and spend our leisure. We held a Mathematics Workshop for parents this morning. We concentrated on the Addition and Subtraction and let parents know what content is taught in each grade and how they can support their children.
- Be ethical… follow the example of Jesus
The job applicants of 2036 will need to be well aware of the way society works and be savvy enough to navigate this. They will be subject to targeted technology/news/shopping and politics and so they will need to be capable communicators who have a firm set of Christian values that they apply to their decisions.
So our children are “future ready” we have been working on their reading and mathematical ability. Here are some mathematics tips for our current parents to ensure success.
At this mornings workshop we looked at some of the work of Jo Boaler. Her maths tips for parents are:
- Everyone can can learn math to the highest levels. Encourage students to believe in themselves. There is no such thing as a “math” person. Everyone can reach the highest levels they want to, with hard work.
- Mistakes are valuable. Mistakes grow your brain! It is good to struggle and make mistakes.
- Questions are really important. Always ask questions, always answer questions. Ask yourself: why does that make sense?
- Math is about creativity and making sense. Math is a very creative subject that is, at its core, about visualizing patterns and creating solution paths that others can see, discuss and critique.
- Mathematics is about connections and communicating Mathematics is a connected subject and a form of communication. Represent math in different forms eg words, a picture, a graph, an equation, and link them. Colour code!
- Depth is much more important than speed. Top mathematicians, such as Laurent Schwartz, think slowly and deeply.
- Mathematics is about learning not performing. Mathematics is a growth subject, it takes time to learn and it is all about effort.
Here are some reading tips for our current parents to ensure success.
If your child reads
5 minutes per day |
They have 200 000 word exposures in a year |
10 minutes per day |
They have 600 000 word exposures in a year |
15 minutes per day |
They have 1 000 000 word exposures in a year |
20 minutes per day |
They have 1 800 000 word exposures in a year |
- If your child can’t read the book they want to read .. read it to them
- Take home readers are not good literature .. they are used to practise the skills taught in class only
- Children still need to be read to until they are fluent readers.. read above their reading level to supply them with the grammar, vocabulary, concepts and themes of good or “bad” literature.
I hope to see you all at the fair!!
Regards
Julie Caldwell

3 days to go to the Summer Fun School Fair!
We’re in the final stages preparing everything for Sunday; the Showbags have been filled, cake-boxes despatched, children are rehearsing for the Talent Show and we’re saying our prayers for sunshine (without too much heat and definitely no rain)…
Last Friday was Summer Fun Mufti Day! The school was filled with bright colour and huge smiles to celebrate ‘Summer Fun’. That energy and excitement will flow into Sunday’s Fair.
Here’s what you can do to share the excitement:
- Sign up to be a Volunteer at the Fair. We still need helpers from every year group. It’s a great way to catch-up with people at the Fair while adding value at the same time. Please sign up to do one of the vacant jobs at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090f4faba82babf94-shmspring1
- Buy your child’s stunning Summer Fun self-portrait on Trybooking at www.trybooking.com/BFYWE Your child’s artwork has been beautifully mounted as a precious keepsake for you to treasure - and they’re only $10. The artwork will be sent home with children next week, after the Fair (be aware; you won’t be able to take them home from the Fair because they’re part of the Mini Art Gallery installation).
- Pre-purchase your children’s wristbands, tokens and Show Bags for the Fair on Trybooking at www.trybooking.com/BFYWE. You’ll save a lot by buying ahead of the Fair – don’t put it off.
- Bake something yummy to sell at the Cake Stall if you have children in years 1, 2 or 4. All the instructions were outlined on the sheet that was sent home with the cake boxes this week. The Cake Stall is always one of the most popular attractions at the Fair.
- Order your child’s Christmas Cards, calendars or gifts online at http://www.crazycamel.com.au/14108 This link will be open right up until the end of the Fair. Lots of beautiful artwork has been submitted but not all of them have been ordered. Don’t be disappointed, order yours now if you haven’t already.
- Help your child practice their act for the Talent Show.
We also have the pleasure of announcing the winners of the Golden Wristband Raffle!
Each child has won a Golden Wristband for all the rides at the Summer Fun School Fair plus $30 worth of Tokens – total value $70! A huge congratulations to:
Kindergarten – Freddie Carney
Year 1 – Will Broomhead
Year 2 – Sienna McMurray
Year 3 – Angus Lund
Year 4 – Elise Hector-Constant
Year 5 – Kieron Deniz
Year 6 – Ava Hatzidis
And the 2 classes that sold the most raffle tickets, who’ve earned a special pizza lunch are 3 Gold and 5 Blue. Thank you to all families who got behind our raffle and congratulations again to the lucky winners.
Thanks for your involvement in the lead-up to the Fair. We can’t wait to see you all on Sunday!
Wow !! Almost half way through Term 4 already. Where has the year gone?
Our final day for borrowing books will be Friday 29/11/2019. Friday 6/12/2019 will be returns only.
Sincere thanks to parents who have helped their children return overdue books. There is still time to return any more outstanding, so please keep looking around home, in school bags and in tubs in the classrooms.
Our wonderful Premier’s Reading Challenge Students who completed their reading logs, have been waiting patiently for their certificates to commemorate their achievements. They should be delivered to school within the next couple of weeks.
We are also still waiting on books ordered from our guest author Lesley Gibbes during book week. Hopefully these will arrive soon too.
Today the students will take home the final Scholastic Book Club catalogue for this year. Closing date for orders will be Sunday 1st December to allow plenty of time for delivery before the last day of school (18/12).
Don't forget to let us know if you are shopping on behalf of Santa (cecilia.jago@syd.catholic.edu.au). We will make sure that your order goes directly to him and not home with your child.
Happy Reading!

State Basketball Challenge - Photos as promised
Last week, we informed parents and families that Sacred Heart had nine basketball teams representing the school in Albury at the basketball challenge which has been running for 36 years.
Twenty five Catholic schools from all over NSW travelled to Albury with most schools arriving on Friday.
The Senior Boys A (Division 1) won against Albury A 24-7 and the Senior Girls B (Division 3) won against Goulburn PP 11-4. Both teams went through the tournament undefeated and won their division.
Our junior boys got to the Grand Final but unfortunately were defeated by North Albury A 23-4. In the Semi Finals we had a few unlucky losses with our Senior Girls A losing by a point in over time.
Everyone demonstrated our school motto and good sportsmanship throughout the weekend. We also had a challenge to make two new friends that were not from our school and I think just about everybody achieved that goal. We all had dinner together on the Saturday night and watched the rugby world cup when England defeated New Zealand. It was a great weekend and we cannot wait to participate and be spectators next year. Thank you to all members of the Sacred Heart community who worked on making this event possible.

Don't forget Iceblock Friday is on this Friday 15 November. This Friday is the last Iceblock Friday for the year!
