Dear Parents and Carers
We are often proud of our students at Sacred Heart but it was an extra special moment last Friday evening as 30 of our Year Six students joined the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout and slept overnight in our school hall. They asked perceptive questions and listened to our speaker from Cana Farm who spoke about how we can preserve the dignity of a homeless person and the simple things we can do to help. The students and their families and our wider community raised over $10 000 for St Vincent de Paul. Many thanks to Mr Brierley for this new initiative in our school. It showed how mature our Year Six children can be.
This week we have celebrated Science Week. Last Week it began with a visit to the Planetarium set up in the hall. Fizzics came to complete their final experiments with the children and we had a visit from Doctor Alana Wylie who spoke to the children about the latest advances in science and helped them launch class rockets in the playground. Dr Wylie runs before school investigation clubs and we would like to see if there would be interest in the community to have Dr Wylie run one at Sacred Heart.
You are all invited to Father Phil’s Golden Jubilee school mass. On Friday the 23rd August he will celebrate 50 years since he was ordained. You are invited to our special mass on the 23rd August (next Friday at 9.15am) There will be morning tea in the playground for students visitors and children. We have special guests: Bishop Terry, Mr Tony Duncan and Marist students and Mr Vince Campbell as well. The children have contributed to a wonderful whole school present for Father Phil. We would like to make this a very special occasion for Father Phil who has given 50 years of service to the Catholic Church and over 12 years of service to this community. You are also invited to contribute to the parish/school gift for Father Phil. If you would like to donate to the parish gift please put your donation, in cash, in an envelope and send to the school office or take it to the parish office.
Below please find an expression of interest form for two additional extra curricular activities that we hope to introduce to Sacred Heart. One is the Young Investigators group that would run on Wednesday mornings before school for an hour and the second is Spanish Language lessons which would be held after school on a day to be determined. If you think that you would like to take up one of these opportunities please fill in the expression of interest forms linked here.

NEXT WEEK
Tuesday morning is our Book Character Parade and the theme is Reading is my Superpower. Thank you to all the children who submitted posters for the Book Week competition. Our visiting author is Lesley Gibbs who has written a number of children’s books including Scary Night and Fizz the police dog series.

It has been a Science Week like never before at SHM! Themed "Destination Moon" our very own "Science Guy" Mrs Martina Petersen took us on an imagination rocket ride from the Kindergarten students right through to our staff members. We tried out some new experiments, made videos, learnt about gravity, rockets were built and launched... We have had the planetarium visit us, the students met with Dr Wylie, a new before school science class is being investigated, and Fizzics Education visited us again!

The SHM Students have had a mammoth sport week and we could not be prouder sharing their results!
National School Basketball States Championships
In the National School basketball state championships Toby Roper-Marshall and Cassidy Thomson are playing amazingly.

The NSW U12Girls have played strongly this week. Cassidy was highest point scorer in the Qld pool game and doing really well. The NSW girls fought for the Bronze medal against SA (3rd or 4th place). NSW beat SA in the pool game, although they are a strong team and played well but in the end SA won 44-37, QLD winning the Bronze medal.
The boys U12 (Toby’s team) have had a harder run and playing off 6th and 7th spot this morning. Toby was also the top point scorer in most of his games. Well done NSW!
Eastern Region Trials
We can already feel the aura of SUPER POWERS around our school as excitement builds up for Book Week next week.
The week ZOOMS off with a start on Monday with Years 3 and 4 visiting Mosman Library.
Our highlight of the week will be our Book Week Parade on Tuesday which will commence in the playground straight after morning assembly. Secret and Super powers will surround us as each year has the opportunity to radiate the energy of their Book characters.
Children may come to school dressed in their costume but please be mindful of comfort and safety for the day. Sports uniform should be worn under their costume or brought in their bags to change into. Weather conditions could be quite cool, so warm clothing is essential too. Even super heros feel the cold and need to be comfortable !
For safety around school, if your super hero usually carries weapons to combat evil, we suggest that their strength for the day comes with carrying a Book instead.
On Thursday, we have a visit from author Lesley Gibbes who will talk to K-2 and 3-6 about her books and what it takes to be an avid writer! She will also be available to sign copies of her books as well.
Take the time to have a look at the displays in our Library, our teachers and staff have shared what their favourite book was as a child, just lovely to see.
But ….. the biggest BLAST of powerful energy so far, has been through our Book Week Poster competition!! They are displayed around the school and show the talent and passion of the students depicting how important books are to us all.
Sincere thanks to our super Art Teacher Miss Conroy, who guided them through the GALAXY to produce these incredible posters. Winners will be announced at the parade on Tuesday.

After Book Week, we will have details regarding the Carnival Book Fair commencing Monday 2nd September.
Looking forward to seeing you all next week. Reading really is our -
SECRET SUPER POWER!

Invite to Dad's sports trivia night out
The rally is a challenge to drive an ‘old’ car from Melbourne to Townsville over the Birdsville track. To be able to take part he must raise $5,000 to support cancer research. So far he has raised $1,700, and with the school community behind him, let's help him raise some much needed money for the Cancer Council.
Rick would like to invite all Dads to the Sports Trivia Night on Saturday 14 September 8 pm at Warringah Bowling Club in Mosman.
Tickets for the trivia night are $25 and you’re welcome to get a table together or elect to be allocated to a table. There are great prizes to win!
It promises to be a cracker of a night out with mates and Rick would really appreciate the support for such a worthy cause.

Great news! Sacred Heart has joined Shopnate (shopnate.com.au)
With shopnate.com.au you can help our school raise funds simply by doing your everyday online shopping. Once registered you don’t have to do anything you wouldn’t normally do when buying things online.
Over 680 big name retailers such as Target, eBay, ASOS, Booking.com, Menulog, Woolworths, Ticketmaster, Dan Murphy’s and Amazon are included (just about any site you spend $$ on online). Every time you shop, our school will receive a small percentage of the purchase price (1%-5%).
It’s completely free to you as the purchase prices are the same as you would usually pay. In fact Shopnate actually has regular discounts from its retail partners not available if you don’t go through Shopnate.
You’ll be surprised how these donations can add up. If we all sign up we should be able to generate thousands for the school each year, and get these donations without much effort at all.
We want to raise as much as possible so please sign up at: https://www.shopnate.com.au/cause/sacred-heart-primary-school-mosman
Importantly once you have registered download the Donation Reminder from the Shopnate home page. When you do this, it will tell you if a site you are on is a Shopnate partner.
