Dear Sacred Heart families,
Lockdown 2021 - Week 2
I hope that parents and students are adjusting to our lockdown and home learning. Most children seem to have gotten into the routine of work at home (or supervised work at school). We are hearing some very positive feedback from parents about the work set, the support and in particular the independence many children are displaying. We found that after last year’s home learning experience parents and teachers were able to have some very practical conversations about children’s work habits and whether they were seeing the same at home as at school. Please contact your child’s teacher if your child is not managing with the work or if they are not able to independently complete most work. Hopefully our lockdown period will only extend one more week and the children will return full time to school.
Our two Zoom assemblies will continue each week in lockdown. Thank you to the parents who nominate their children for a PAWS award on Friday. We are particularly proud of the children who are receiving these awards on Friday as they are meeting the PAWS expectations outside of school as well as having met them already in school.
Fridays’ assembly will be followed by a mini celebration (on Zoom) for Kinder to recognise the fact that they have been at “school” for 100 days. Kinder will use the same Zoom link as the assembly - just stay on the Zoom link for assembly while we move to the Kinder class.
Our staff are here to support parents and students during this lockdown period. If we can help in any way please let us know. The contact details for the office and leadership team are:
The office (Sheryl): info@shmosman.catholic.edu
The office (Ingrid):accounts.01438@sydstu.catholic.edu.au
Mrs Caldwell: julie.caldwell@syd.catholic.edu.au
Mr Brierley: nicholas.brierley@syd.catholic.edu.au
Mrs Edwards:samantha.edwards@syd.catholic.edu.au
Miss Jackson: kristen.jackson@syd.catholic.edu.au
For classroom teachers’ email addresses please see the Compass note for each class for the week that details the work for that week.
A reminder that while we are at reduced numbers NSWHealth is also encouraging teachers to work from home so we do need the parents who send their children to school to book in through the office by email by 3pm the day prior (i.e. Friday for Monday) that you would like your child to attend to ensure we have enough teachers on site.
We all love cooking in lockdown - please see Mrs. Edwards mathematical cooking recipe and the offer from parent Mrs. Karina Savage below for some Lockdown kitchen/food inspiration.
Update from Sydney Catholic Schools
Tony Farley, our Executive Director will hold another live Q and A session on Friday evening. Based on feedback from participants, Sydney Catholic Schools is pleased to host two focussed Facebook Live COVID-19 events this Friday night, 23 July 2021:
- From 5 - 5.30pm we are holding our Kindy to Year 2 Event, to connect with our Kindy through to Year 2 parents about our supports during lockdown
- From 6 - 6.30pm we are holding our Year 12 Event, for our Year 12 parents and students, to provide up to the minute support, guidance and reassurance.
Hosted by our Executive Director and Chief of Staff, and joined by SCS experts, the Live Facebook event will be interactive. You can also ask questions in advance by posting comments into the comments section of the event on our Facebook page.
Don’t forget to follow us to ensure you can be part of the conversation!
In Heartfelt today you will find an invitation from Mary Lozina, our Family Educator to the Alpha series. It will be a Zoom meeting first off. I did my first Alpha course many years ago as a teacher and parent of a young child. I found it a rewarding way to explore my faith, connect with people on the same journey and this exploration eventually led me to take up the call to leadership in a Catholic school. I recommend the Alpha course to anyone wanting to reconnect with their faith, to anyone wanting to explore their faith with others or anyone who would like to just have a look and see.
Enjoy your week
Regards
Julie Caldwell
NAIDOC WEEK
Australia recently celebrated NAIDOC Week, an annual celebration that is held across Australia in July, to acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of First
Nation Australian peoples. What an exciting time NAIDOC Week was, especially for our Indigenous Australian communities, with Ash Barty winning the women’s singles title at Wimbledon and Tai Tuivasa winning the UFC heavyweight division.
Ash Barty is now the current women's singles champion in the world. She is the second Australian to receive this title, after fellow Indigenous Australian player Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
This year, the theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Heal Country.’ This ties in so beautifully to the Deep Learning that we are engaged in at Sacred Heart, with the support of David Harrington and his work around gardening and sustainability.
God of all creation
As we journey together in this Great Southern Land,
We pray for healing, forgiveness, and unity,
Creating a path of goodwill, with justice and compassion.
Jesus, through the power of Your love,
You have given us the courage, wisdom, and strength
To share our gifts and talents in humility.
In peace and understanding we reconcile with each other.
Creator Spirit, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving,
for the many blessings we have received.
Allow Your Spirit to wash over us
And give us strength to walk together as one.
Amen.

SCECS MOSMAN LOCKDOWN EXTENSION
In welcome news to all the Federal Government has announced that it will be supporting families and providers of child care during this extended lockdown period in Sydney. This announcement will allow families to retain their booking with the OSHC services until we emerge from lockdown whilst providing SCECS with a stable source of revenue to keep services staffed and open for children who cannot be educated and cared for in the home.
For bookings from Monday 19th July 2021 all gap fees will be waived meaning no child care costs will be charged to families during the lockdown period. Sydney Catholic Early Childhood Services (SCECS) is able to support families by keeping all bookings in place thus securing their child’s spot in OSHC.
Families are also eligible for additional absences over and above the usual 42 days per year as a local area emergency has been declared, so they are not disadvantaged in any way.
If you have previously advised SCECS that you would like to cancel your booking we will happily reinstate it for you to secure your child’s position.
Please ensure to let your Coordinator know if your child will be absent during the lockdown period so we can mark them on our roll accordingly.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance.
