Chloe brought home the "eye.heart.science" brochure which was recently handed out in school, and said she wanted to join. She spent the last two weeks working on a project about why Oil and Water don’t mix and did so well explaining the project at the fair to all the visitors and various judges and was the youngest as it was kindy up to Year 6 where she won 1st place (in the individual category)!
"eye.heart.science" is a local competition run by Dr. Wylie between several schools in the Lower North Shore. There were around 102 contestants of all ages. The judges choose two first places, one for the best individual and one for best team projects, (as well as two runner ups) and we were so proud that Chloe won 1st place for the project she did on "Why oil & water do not mix", being so much younger than the others.
You may recall Dr. Wylie visiting SHM recently for an expo, we have subsequently launched the expression of interest for her before school science club, link: https://eyeheartscience-my.sharepoint.com/:w:/g/personal/alana_eyeheartscience_com_au/Ed8lO_L0kIJJvBHer8OTvxUBVSg2Qeh0RZyjThKGW9iN5Q?e=74oHjf
There were so many incredible projects there, all children did an amazing job. Chloe spoke well and grew in confidence as the evening progressed and shared all she learnt with those who stopped to see her project.
Chloe loves to experiment and was excited to do a fun project. She chose this one because is looked like he most fun. She decorated a box that had UV light torches in it, shining on a glass of baby oil. She dropped in some water (mixed with fluorescent paint) and explained that water was more dense than oil, and that's why the water drops sink to the bottom. She learnt about density and her favourite fact was learning, that there are more molecules in a glass of water then there are known stars in the universe. She also explained using two bottles, how soap helps oil and water (who are made differently and usually don't mix) "be friends" because soap has two sides to it, one side that loves water, and ones side that likes oil, so it sits between the molecules and helps them "hold hands" and connect. She also used a puzzle to explain this.
