WELLBEING & ENGAGEMENT

Positive Behaviours for Learning – Supporting Our Students Together

As we begin Term 4, we continue to focus on helping our students grow in responsibility, kindness, and positive decision-making through our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework.

Below are some common questions and answers about how our behaviour processes work and how we can best support our children together.

Q: What is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)?

A: At Sacred Heart, we use the PBL framework to create a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for every child. PBL is a proactive, whole-school approach that focuses on teaching and encouraging positive behaviours. We clearly define our expectations, model and teach them, acknowledge students when they demonstrate them, and respond consistently when behaviour needs redirection. Through this approach, we support both the learning and social-emotional wellbeing of all of our students.

Q: Why do students miss the whole-school reward if they have a major behaviour breach?

A: Missing the reward is not about punishment, but about reflection and growth. It gives students the chance to think about their choices and consider how they can respond differently next time.

Q: What happens during the time when a reward is missed?

A: Students work discreetly with Mrs Macourt in the library to talk about what happened, complete an age-appropriate reflection activity, and set goals for improvement. The focus is always on learning and moving forward positively — with the intention that after missing once, they will not miss again.

Q: How will parents know if their child is missing the reward?

A: After any major behaviour breach in the term (either directly, or through the accumulation of three minors), the classroom teacher or Principal/Assistant Principal will call parents to discuss what has occurred and how we can best support the child in making positive choices moving forward.

From this term, a Behaviour Reflection Form will also be sent home when a major behaviour breach occurs. Parents and children will complete it together, discussing the behaviour and planning positive next steps before returning it to school.

Q: Why involve parents in the reflection process?

A: Strong home and school partnerships make a big difference. Involving parents helps reinforce shared expectations and provides consistent support for students as they learn from their experiences.

Q: How can parents help at home?

A: Talk regularly with your child about kindness, respect, and making good choices. Celebrate positive behaviour and encourage reflection when challenges arise. Together, we can help every student grow in confidence and character.

Wellbeing Groups – Grow Your Mind

Wellbeing groups with myself will continue to run weekly throughout this term, exploring key themes from the Grow Your Mind program. These groups run alongside whole class Health lessons delivered by classroom teachers, helping to reinforce and deepen students’ understanding of positive health and wellbeing. Some of the key themes we will explore include: friendships, resilience, emotional regulation and positive mindset. You can also explore these wellbeing themes at home by listening to the Grow Your Mind podcast, which offers engaging insights and practical strategies to support children’s mental health.

Wishing you all a great week,
