TEACHING AND LEARNING UPDATE

Encouraging Summer Reading for Continued Growth

As we approach the summer holidays, it's important to remember that learning doesn't take a break. Maintaining the incredible progress your children have made this year relies on keeping their minds active, and there is no greater tool for this than reading.

Research shows that consistent reading during the holidays not only helps students retain the skills they've developed throughout the year but also ensures they are ready to tackle new challenges when school resumes. Conversely, a lack of reading over the break can result in a significant loss of literacy skills, sometimes referred to as the "summer slide." This loss can make it harder for children to catch up once they return to the classroom.

There is nothing more impactful for your child’s education than encouraging them to read every day. Reading strengthens their vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and imagination, setting them up for success across all areas of learning.

Tips for Supporting Summer Reading

Here are some practical ways you can help your child maintain their literacy skills:

  • Make Reading a Daily Habit: Set aside a dedicated time for reading each day, even just 15–20 minutes.
  • Choose the Right Books: Let your child select books they are interested in to foster a love for reading.
  • Explore Different Genres: Encourage them to try fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and graphic novels to keep things exciting.
  • Read Together: Share a story with younger children or take turns reading chapters with older ones.
  • Visit Libraries: Local libraries often run fantastic holiday reading programs with prizes and activities.
  • Use Technology Wisely: Audiobooks and eBooks can be a fun alternative, especially during car trips or quiet moments.

Make this holiday a time of discovery and growth through reading. Your encouragement and involvement can make all the difference. Every book they read is a step towards their future success.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful summer filled with new experiences and quality family time.

Thank you for a wonderful year!
