Dear Parents and Carers
Lent - Be More!
Project Compassion this year, is inspired by the words of Saint Oscar Romero “Aspire not to have more but to be more.” Project Compassion calls on us all to contribute to some of the poorest nations on earth. The inspiring stories on the Project Compassion website give witness to the support families are given by the funds received through their annual Project Compassion drive. The following link shares the stories of some of the people who have benefitted from the appeal. You may wish to view them with your family during the Lenten season to help them with the understanding of how many people in the world lead lives very different to their own.
Project Compassion, St Vincent de Paul and Cana Communities are our main social justice outreach initiatives at Sacred Heart. Each class has a Project Compassion box - children may deposit coins in these to donate to Project Compassion or you can donate directly to Project Compassion on the website.
Launch of Sacred Heart Parent Information Handbook
Many thanks to Anja Venn, one of our parents and our office staff who have moved and updated our parent handbook onto a new online format. For our new parents it may answer many queries and for our existing parents you may want to have a look at the new format. If you have had queries about buses to and from school please see the section on buses. We would welcome feedback and if you can think of anything we have not covered please let us know. The handbook is on our school website under School Life. The handbook is password protected and not available to the general public. The password is SHM2020.
We have a number of concerned residents and parents who have contacted us to say that there are parents who are double parking in Wudgong Street and asking their children to meet them there. This is not a legal or a safe option for pick up. Car line takes a little longer but it is a much safer option for your children.
Student Representative Council elections and nominations
Each class from Year 1 to Year 6 has elected representatives who meet with a teacher to air their views on how the school is going and where our challenges lie. Miss Blake is managing the SRC this year. The SRC will also help with our sustainability initiatives. Congratulations to Esther Cowan and Thomas Lee from Kindergarten and Monique Carr and Evan Chim from Year One, Eve Grover and Byron McEleveny from Year Two, Christian Cheung and Caitlin Swain from Year Three, Leon Sitosta and James Winter from Year Four and Amelie Woodlock and Summer Costas from Year Five who are elected class representatives this term. The Year Six SRC will work with these young leaders in the first and second term.
Our school representatives attended our first Zero Emissions network meeting at Mosman Council last Wednesday after school. Students and teachers from the area attended and shared the initiatives they had implemented in their schools. Thank you to Mrs Carvalho and Mrs Petersen who are sharing their passion for sustainability with our school. We will be sharing a number of new initiatives with the school over the coming months.
School Captains - Be the Best You
Each year our school captains are asked if they would like to take forward a theme or idea. Our School captains this year chose the theme: BE THE BEST YOU.
They are encouraging all students at Sacred Heart to be the best version of themselves. To always try to be their best in class, on the playground and at home without comparison to others. A resource that can help families continue this conversation is the BE YOU website. BE YOU - is a mental health initiative which supports schools and families with resources and a framework for promoting mental health. Their fact sheets are well worth reading especially the ones on social development as this is where some children can experience difficulty at times in their school journey.
Our Cross Country Carnival is tomorrow - weather dependent.
All children should come packed and ready to attend. In the event of rain, which is predicted, the carnival will be postponed. Unfortunately NSW Health guidelines state that parents may not attend as spectators. The only parents allowed in attendance are those who have nominated jobs on the day.
The next few weeks…these dates are also contained on the sidebar of our newsletter and the calendar on the homepage of Compass.
