Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week many of our Year 4 students made their First Holy Communion. It was such a privilege for the teachers and myself to join with our families on this very special occasion.
Year six families please note that Bishop Terry has given us dates for Confirmation to ensure all our Year six students are confirmed before they go to High School. They are the 1st, 2nd and 4th December.
Father’s Day and Zoom Assembly
We wish all our fathers and male carers a very special day on Sunday for Father’s Day. We have had to cancel our traditional Father's Day Breakfast for this year. All children will hold a special prayer service for their dads in class. This will be videod and will be sent from the teachers later in the week. On Friday we will hold a Zoom Assembly at 8.40am where we would like to say Happy Father’s Day to our dads, have a wrap up of the week and give out our weekly PAWS awards. The link for the meeting is here - https://scscatholic.zoom.us/j/97123730250. Password: father We'd love to have you join us. Please ensure when joining the Zoom meeting that you are identified correctly otherwise you will not be admitted, i.e. First name, last name.
This week we launched a revamp of our school expectations and PAWS stickers/tokens to encourage and teach the school’s behaviour expectations. Our school Behaviour Management Policy is based on the Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework.
Positive Behaviour for Learning is a broad range of systemic and individualised strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problematic behaviour. If you compare PBL to traditional discipline (threats and treats) you can see the focus is on explicit teaching of expectations rather than a reactive approach. This week all children in the school have been provided with a sticker book where they can track their positive acknowledgements. The stickers are cumulative and after receiving 24 stickers the children will receive a bronze award, after 100 stickers the children will receive a silver award at assembly and after the children receive 200 they will receive a gold award at assembly. These awards are extrinsic motivation that we hope will lead to intrinsic motivation for all students to feel a personal sense of achievement for following the school expectations.
Child Protection Week - 7th-11th September
Putting Children First
In the year 2017-18 in Australia there were 32 000 cases of proven abuse and neglect against children. At Sacred Heart we have, over the last few years, ensured that we are promoting the theme of Child Protection Week “putting children first” and that it is at the core of our decision making. During Child Protection Week each year we take on the task of teaching all children in the school about child safety and neglect and how they can be protected and be kept safe.
Through the introduction of the following lessons (see the chart below) we equip our children to have control of their bodies, to have a voice and to be safe. If you have not had these conversations with your child it will be a good week to do so. If you have any queries about the content of your grade’s lessons please contact your child’s class teacher.
Protective Behaviours Lessons for Child Protection Week 2020
We will transition to summer uniforms after the holidays. If there are any very warm days for the next few weeks (tomorrow is predicted to be over 25 degrees) children may wear their sports uniform. If children are training before or after school they should wear their sports uniforms to school on those days as our Covid safe plan for sport training discourages students congregating in the bathrooms and using them as changerooms.
Staff Development Days
Two of our Staff Development Days for 2020 will be held on the last day of term 3 (Friday 25th September) and the first day of term 4 (Monday 12th October).
Regards
Julie Caldwell
