Dear Parents and Carers
Sometimes a picture tells the best story. The week has been exciting one for all.
The Book Character Parade saw many superheroes celebrating the Reading is my Superpower Theme. Many thanks to Mrs Jago and Mrs Spano in the library for their work towards making this day a wonderful celebration for the children. Our visiting author Lesley Gibbs engaged the children with her tales of writing and her children’s books including Scary Night and Fizz the police dog series.

The students were introduced to the new head coach Brendan Mathes on Wednesday. Brenden and the Year Six basketballers played a spirited game much to the delight of the students who are looking forward to the next season of basketball.
Today we celebrated Father Phil’s Golden Jubilee school mass. It was a beautiful celebration prepared by our teachers and students. Thank you to our special guests, parishioners and parents who attended and helped out to make this day a very special one for Father Phil.

We also celebrated the first Blue Awards for Term 3. Here are the students who were selected for today's award ceremony, each receiving a generous gift voucher by our sponsor, Claudia Portale of Mosman McGrath.

Below please find an expression of interest form for two additional extra curricular activities that we hope to introduce to Sacred Heart. One is the Young Investigators group that would run on Wednesday mornings before school for an hour and the second is Spanish Language lessons which would be held after school on a day to be determined. If you think that you would like to take up one of these opportunities, please fill in the expression of interest forms.

The following resource has been shared by Sydney Catholic Schools to increase family engagement with road safety education.
Important reminder about vehicle movement around schools
It is important to remember of some basic road safety rules around the school.
When “dropping” children before school at carline we remind parents/ carers who disregard this kiss and drop process by getting out of their cars then standing on the pavement, chatting for many minutes with other parents/carers that this is potentially dangerous behaviour. We have also observed children jumping out of cars, in the middle of the road, whilst others wait in the long line of cars behind those parked cars.
Be mindful of children and their parents walking and cycling to school, as well as those students catching buses or waiting to be picked up by parents in vehicles. Schools can be very busy places at drop off and pick up time, and your courtesy and patience are appreciated.
The 40km/h school zones are in place and are applicable from 8.00am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4.00pm on school days and speeding penalties apply.
If you do speed or park illegally, you can expect a fine and the loss of demerit points.
What a blast of a week we’ve had! Our school simply radiated with secret super powers all week and is ablaze in colour from the displays of all our Book week Posters.
Our week zoomed off with a start on Monday with Years 3 and 4 visiting Mosman Library to hear author Mick Elliott. We also had some winners from Year 3 and Year 6 who entered their Competition.
Tuesday crash landed with our Book Week Parade. We were dazzled by an amazing array of costumes from each class depicting characters from much loved books. Our teachers zoomed around in red capes and masks showing that “Teaching Is Their Secret Super Power”.
We were fortunate enough to have author Lesley Gibbes visit on Thursday to share her books with us. She captured the attention of all from beginning to end, transforming in to the characters from her stories as she read them. Lesley also talked about what it is like to be a writer and how she came up with ideas for her plots.
Books that were pre ordered have not been delivered to school as yet. We will arrange for Lesley to sign all books and should be ready to take home early next week.
Information regarding the annual Carnival Book Fair will be sent home next week. The fare will be in our Library from Monday 2/9 to Friday 6/9.
Sincere thanks to all families for supporting your children in participating in The Poster Competition and Book Week Parade. We had many awards from each grade and those children received a voucher to spend at The Book Fair.
Happy Reading
Cecilia and Josie
National Child Protection Week
Below you will see some helpful points that parents can use with their children to reinforce the importance of concepts such as safe places and safe people.
Reminding children about stranger danger and who to speak to if they are scared or have a stranger approach them should not be frightening but a normal conversation about protective behaviours that provides them with some strategies to be safe.
Some points that should be addressed include:
- making sure your parents or another responsible adult you know where you are at all times
- if you walk to and from school, always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets or use paths where there are lots of other people
- do not talk to people you do not know
- never get into a car with someone you don’t know
- if a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop
- if someone tries to grab you, yell out as loud as you can, “Go away, I don’t know you.” This attracts attention of other people around you
- know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police
- learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help. Safe adults include police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust
- if you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell the operator that you are scared.
Invite to Dad's sports trivia night out
The rally is a challenge to drive an ‘old’ car from Melbourne to Townsville over the Birdsville track. To be able to take part he must raise $5,000 to support cancer research. So far he has raised $1,700, and with the school community behind him, let's help him raise some much needed money for the Cancer Council.
Rick would like to invite all Dads to the Sports Trivia Night on Saturday 14 September 8 pm at Warringah Bowling Club in Mosman.
Tickets for the trivia night are $25 and you’re welcome to get a table together or elect to be allocated to a table. There are great prizes to win!
It promises to be a cracker of a night out with mates and Rick would really appreciate the support for such a worthy cause.
