Dear Families
This afternoon you will be able to retrieve your child's report in preparation for your parent/teacher interview next week. To retrieve your child's report log into Compass via the app or the compass website: https://
When you get your child's report please spend a little time reading the explanatory guide at the beginning of the report. Please note that Kindergarten only have three achievement levels (thorough, sound and basic) while years One to Six have five achievement levels (extensive, thorough, sound, basic and elementary). Each child's achievement level has been made through a combination of formal assessments, informal assessments, work samples, individual interviews (especially in mathematics) and matching work with NESA syllabus expectations.
Your child's effort grade is made using teacher observation of a child's engagement in class, their attention to completion of work and their participation in whole class and group situations. There are four grades for effort for Kindergarten through to Year Six. (Needs improvement, satisfactory, commendable and outstanding.) When reading your child's report you will find that teachers have given you areas that your child is working well in so you can congratulate them on their success in those areas. Any areas of need are framed as a goal for the next two terms. A helpful discussion to have with your child is to ask them if they know (or have any strategies) how they will achieve that. This can be a good starting point for your conversation next week with teachers.
A few reminders:
- Mosman Council rangers seem to be quite regular at the school at the moment so please be aware of the parking regulations and safety around the school as the fines are very high for infringements around school.
- A reminder that no dogs should be brought onto the school grounds.
- If you are going on a holiday for more than 10 school days please ensure the paperwork is filled out ahead of time. Extended Leave Application, 10 days and over during school term This document along with other handy links is located later in the newsletter under: "Quick Link to Guides & Forms"
- A reminder about our Writing Workshop at 8.45am on Tuesday 2nd July. The workshop will run for an hour and then classrooms will be open for you to see writing in action. Our school goal for the year is to improve writing and we would love many parents to attend so that we can work on this goal together. At the workshop you will also hear three of our public speaking finalists present their speeches so you can "hear" some of our wonderful writing.

Very exciting times for a few of our Sacred Heart students. Recently, Millie Cargill of Year 2 who participated in the Irish National Dancing Championship last weekend for Dwyer Whelan dancing school, winning her section. The INDA is the longest running Irish dancing competition in Australia.
Due to her hard work and passion for dance, she placed overall 1st place! Congratulations to Millie and all her hard work! Thank you to her parents for supporting her and taking Millie to all her practices.
Cassidy Thomson of Year 6 has been out and about for the last week representing Mackillop at the PSSA Girls Basketball Championship at Aubury. Over the course of 4 days Cassidy played a number of games against teams within New South Wales. In her first game, the Mackillop team was up against the Polding team. Mackillop came on top for this game and Mackillop therefore received the Catholic Cup. A great start to their tour.
After 4 days of competition, Cassidy and her team made their way to the grand final! After a grueling 4 quarters, the Mackillop team placed second in the entire competition! Well done Cassidy! To further this excitement and due to Cassidy’s love of Basketball, passion and hard work, she has been selected to represent New South Wales in the National Competition! In the school basketball pathways this is the highest achievement a student can reach. Well done Cassidy! Sacred Heart looks forward to hearing about your next competition.
On the 14th of June, a number of our students travelled to Eastern Creek for the Mackillop Cross Country. Congratulations to Bronte McPherson, Katie Maddern, Christian and Remy Camus, Poppy O’Brien and Grace Prince for their efforts on the day. Especially considering the weather!
An additional congratulations and standing applause to Poppy O’Brien and Christian and Remy Camus who all placed, securing positions at the PSSA Cross Country Championships! A reflection of their hard work and dedication to their sport. Sacred Heart wishes you all the best in your preparation for the next level.
Public Speaking Day at Sacred Heart
What an amazing day! The stage finals were held on Thursday and were a very successful culmination of the school’s work on persuasive text. The enthusiasm of the students for this task was fantastic.
Congratulations to all the students who participated over the past 3 weeks in speech writing, practice and competition within the classroom, grade and finally across the stages. Public speaking is one of the most important and often dreaded forms of communication. People have many reasons for engaging in public speaking, but the necessary skills are applicable whether someone is speaking to inform, persuade or entertain. We chose to focus on persuasive speeches to complement the classroom outcomes on persuasive text.
The audiences were truly amazed and entertained by the variety of topics and quality of the speeches. It certainly had the Adjudicator, Ms Hayley Jago, making some very difficult decisions in choosing winners, runners-up and highly commended students.
The stage winners were as follows and will receive their certificates at morning assembly.
Early Stage 1:
Winner: Molly
Runner-up: Aurelia
Highly Commended: Cole and Ben
Stage 1:
Winner: Sonni
Runner-up: Amelia
Highly Commended: Sienna
Stage 2:
Winner: Rose
Runner-up: Max
Highly Commended: Hugo
Stage 3:
Winner: Charlie
Runner-up: Henry
Highly Commended: India

Thank you Ms Jago for your wonderful feedback and helpful tips. Thank you also to all the staff who did such a great job of encouraging and supporting their students over the past weeks in order for us to have such a successful event.
I am sure everyone has collected a few helpful tips for 2020’s competition and will put these great skills to good use in their classroom work.

Below is an important change about late booking fees for Vacation Care. Please see the Family Handbook for a list of full conditions: Late Booking Fees: Fees will increase by $10 per child, per day minus the CCS, if you are booking within 7 days prior to the attending date (e.g. If you wish to book for a Wednesday you must have made your booking by 11:59pm Tuesday of the previous week, in order to avoid the $10 late booking fee).
